Deb Hanes-Nelson Fine Art in Watercolor
I am a watercolor artist living in the Great Plains. My focus is on the small town and rural life activities and places as experienced through my piritual discipline of painting. Most of my painting have a rural flavor with a bit of “prairie past times” mixed in with more current trends of everyday life in the tallgrass prairie of the Great Plains.
I retired July 2015 after 35 years as a United Methodist Church pastor. In 2005 I had a spsiritual experience when taking a class at Ghost Ranch in northern New Mexico. It was entitled “Journaling Through Watercolor”. I came home with a new calling and passion. I began painting as often as possible and sought out other artists as a support system. I became a member of Manhattan Watercolor Studio in Manhattan KS and Columbian Artists in Wamego KS. Since retiring I have also joined Topeka Art Guild and began the work of turning my hobby into a business.
In 2013 and 2015 I had painting saccepted in the Kansas Watercolor Society’s National Exhibition at the Wichita Center for the Arts. I credit my quick growth and success to my roots in Florence, my artist colleagues, the communities that I served as a pastor, my wonderfully encouraging husband (Doug Nelson), my supportive parents (Betty and Bob Hanes), and most importantly, the One who has allowed me opportunities to attempted capturing Creation on paper and canvas!
